I have a ground-floor studio apartment in a retirement home suitable for residents with a minor, physical disability. The property comprises a generous-sized bedsit with a recessed sleeping area and larger lounge space, plus a separate kitchen and bathroom/WC. The kitchen is cosy, fully-equipped with an electric cooker and fridge, well-ventilated -- and a stunning view across the Colne Valley. The lounge boasts an even grander view. The apartment is SW-facing, full of sunshine, on a good day, from late afternoon on. The bathroom/WC has a roomy walk-in shower with a fold-down seat. There is a large storeroom off the hallway, plus a built-in wardrobe and a good-sized storage cupboard.
The communal areas include a large TV lounge and a kitchen, a guest bedroom (for two), a free laundry with washing and drying machines, and two beautifully kept gardens with plenty of outdoor seating. There is ample parking space for residents, full wheelchair access with fob-activated automatic doors and a secure entry phone system. The flat has two cord-pull emergency alarms and a sprinkler system, plus fire and smoke alarms. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the building.
The housing cost is £98.82 per week, which includes the Independent Living Officer, on-site during weekdays. The ILO is non-intrusive. This payment also includes water, central heating and scheme management. Heating is year-round. The studio has its own key-operated electric meter. I use about £1.30 per day for cooking and light. This tenancy is a real cost-of-living crisis buster. After benefits I pay £75 all in PER MONTH. A TV licence here costs me £7.50 per annum. Council tax is only £5 per month. The home is quiet, but very friendly. I have good neighbours. We are set well back from the busy Manchester Road.
The bus stop is 2 minutes away. There is easy access to Slaithwaite, Marsden, Eltham, Holmfirth, great hill-walking country. Huddersfield is a 15-minute bus ride away. There are regular trains to Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. Slaithwaite is a beautiful, vibrant village community, with cafes, bars, live music, churches, community arts and activities. It has a large Aldi and a public swimming pool. This is rural living, but it is not isolated. There is a very picturesque canal walk. Linthwaite has a post office and a 24/7 convenience store just 10 minutes down the road from me.
Why would I swap this country paradise for the big Smoke? My partner is in London and the regular commute is too taxing and too expensive, so please bite my hand off!
